This pattern can also exist as a combination of digital and analog hoops that have to be jumped through. I had this experience when I tried to deactivate accounts for Registry Mechanic and Norton Antivirus, both of which we had set up on monthly subscriptions. Functionality to deactivate the account was either non existent or buried in unintelligible UI, which forced me to call both organizations, wade through long phone trees, and endure excessively long wait times. Now, I wish I had documented both cases (perhaps someone else has). Roach Motel clearly is a strong temptation for any company that uses a subscription-based business model.
